The Adrian College football team wrapped up the fall season with a loss on the road at the hands of the Bluffton Beavers, 28-21.
It was the Beavers’ first game and first win of the season, and as of right now, the only game on their schedule until February.
Bluffton got off to a hot start, roaring to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 7-yard TD run and a 61-yard TD, both scored by as they roared out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter by a 7 yard td run then a 61 yard td run, both scored by the senior tailback Darian Greely, and kicker Daniel Blanford connected on both of the extra points. That left the Bulldogs down by two TDs, with just under 5 and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The silent second quarter was broken by Steven Moses, who found the end zone from 4 yards out to put the visiting Bulldogs on the board. However, instead of sending Cooper West out for the extra point, head coach Jim Deere decided to go for the two point conversion and trim the lead to six points. Adrian tried rushing it in but the Beavers’ defense held strong.
After the half, Adrian came out of the locker room hot to open up the final 30 minutes of play. They marched the ball 76 yards in just 5 plays in a drive that spanned just 2 minutes and 4 seconds.Steven Moses capped the drive, finding paydirt for the second time in the game, shortening the Bluffton lead to just two points. Again Deere went for the 2-point conversion, giving the ball to Moses. This time, Moses connected and tied the game, 14-14They gave it to, you guessed it, Steven Moses, who this time converted and tied the game up at 14-14.
Later on in the third, Bluffton regained the lead as Darian Greely found the end zone, putting the Beavers up only 20-14 as Blanford’s kick went wide on the uprights. The Beavers made up for the miss with a fourth-quarter, 6-yard pass from Zachary Nobis to tight end Kais Chiles in the Bulldogs’ endzone. With less than 10 minutes left in the game, Moses scored another TD for the Bulldogs on a 2-yard run, but it was too little, too late as they failed to get the ball back to Jack Wurzer and the Bulldog offense.
Bluffton’s game plan was clear–feed senior tailback Darian Greeley the ball again….. Greeley ended the game with a whopping 42 carries, just missing the 300 yard mark as he tallied 297 yards on the ground, and capped it with 3 touchdowns.
For the Bulldogs, it was a more balanced attack through the air and on the ground. Jack Wurzer had a respectable 14-24 with 253 yards. He didn’t get to the endzone, but he also didn’t turn over the ball. Moses was the standout for Adrian tallying 29 rushing attempts for 159 yards and added 3 rushing touchdowns to his name.
The Bluffton Beavers will move up to 1-0 and the Bulldogs wrap up their fall season at 1-2. Now, the wait is on for a brand new spring season for the Adrian College football team.
Playing any type of football games on the campus of Adrian College in the spring time will take a while to get adjusted to, but jumping into conference play on this altered schedule will certainly have everybody on the edge of their seat.
