Adrian tops Manchester for their First Win

By: Ryan Cuddy

The Bulldogs of Adrian College took home a 41-10 victory in week 2 of the truncated fall schedule. The Adrian College football team took the two and a half hour trip down to Manchester, Indiana to battle with the Spartans of Manchester University, and bounced back from their first game defeat against Trine.

The offense was electric. Jack Wurzer played pretty solid but the damage was done on the ground game with a three-headed attack of Jerome Neal, Jimmie Clark, and Steven Moses. Jerome Neal grabbed the most carries with 13 for 42 yards. But, Clark and Moses outpaced him with 110 yards and 88 yards, respectively. The trio each added a TD to the Bulldogs’ score and contributed to the 251-yard ground attack on the Spartans.

Adrian started the evening strong, scoring on three consecutive drives to open up the game. Cooper West converted on his first field goal of the game with just over six minutes gone in the half. The Bulldogs found the endzone later in the first quarter, just about 4 minutes after their first score. This time, Moses scored off a 19-yard run, putting the Bulldogs up 9-0, but West’s kick missed the mark for the extra point.

On their third drive of the game, Adrian went 60 yards in just 6 plays, setting them up for a 29- yard field goal. This time, West’s kick split the uprights and the Bulldogs added another point to the scoreboard, with 12 to the Spartans 0. Manchester answered later in the quarter, chewing up the final 7:17 of the half with a long grueling 16-play, 89-yard. The drive finished with Andrew Kibler knocking through a 19-yard field goal with 3 seconds left in the half.

The first half also found interceptions on both sides of the line. Manchester’s Dylan Paul threw two into the waiting arms of the Bulldogs, while Wurzer tossed the third to the Spartans.

Adrian scored on the very first possession of the second half with an air strike from Jack Wurzer to Luke Heide as they connected for a 19-yard touchdown putting Adrian up 19-3 after West connected with the extra point. With 3:48 left in the third, the Spartans fumbled at the Bulldog 40 yard line. Defensive lineman DeAndre Jennings scooped up the fumble and returned it to the dog house for a 60-yard touchdown. Jennings’ spectacular play made it to the national stage, with a nod at number 4 on ESPN’s Sportscenter’s Top Ten plays of the week. After West’s PAT sailed through the uprights, Adrian was up 26-3, with the Bulldogs putting the game nearly out of the Spartan’s reach.

A few minutes later, Clark found the endzone and Steven Moses ran in the two-point conversion for a 34-3 Bulldog lead. The Spartans fought back, finding the endzone at 7:01 in the fourth on a 5-yard pass from Dylan Paul to Levar Lesure that capped off a 4-play 24-yard drive. The Bulldogs answered on a 5-yard touchdown run from Jerome Neal with 1:09 on the clock. Walker Evans was successful on the PAT, wrapping up an offensive explosion from the Bulldogs. While Adrian dominated on the scoreboard, the Spartans won the time of possession battle by holding the ball for 10 minutes longer  than the Bulldogs.

The win was AC’s first of the season, putting the Bulldogs at 1-1 while the Spartans dropped to 0-2.
