Figure Skating Takes Bronze at Nationals

On April 13-14, 2019, the Adrian College Varsity Figure Skating Team competed at the Intercollegiate National Championships at the University of Delaware. The team has been undefeated in the Midwestern conference for seven consecutive seasons, continuing to show the excellence of the Bulldog Skating program. The team placed third in the nation, behind Boston University and University of Delaware, and walked away with eight national titles. This is the third consecutive bronze medal for the Bulldogs at the National Championships.

“The arena was full of cheering teams which made skating our programs much more fun,” said co-captain Nikki Czuhajewski.

This competition saw the best collegiate skaters from all over the country in over 30 different events. These events included short program, free skate, pattern dance, and solo free dance at different levels. Each skater competes individually in their event and earns points for their team based on their placement. These points are then totaled up to determine the top teams. In addition to the team placement, each event produced its own national champions.

Adrian’s team earned eight national titles in Delaware from Amy Czuhajewski, Nikki Czuhajewski, Casey Labrenz, Jill Westerbur, and Sadie Woodruff.

Adrian has continued to show their dominance in the figure skating world. Though this program is young, it maintained a perfect record in local competitions for the past six years and has produced several national champions. This comes from the highly committed athletes who work tirelessly continuing to improve their programs, and the dedicated coaches who push their skaters to be the best they can be. The team is incredibly proud of their results at the National Championships and all of their accomplishments throughout the season.

As the 2018-2019 season drawing to a close for Bulldog Skating, the coaching staff is looking forward to next year and continuing to improve upon their success. The figure skating team has already established its presence on the national stage; now they want to keep climbing to to the top.

“We are very excited for the future of this team, as we welcome in our next determined class of Bulldogs,” said coach Ashley Carlson. “Onward and upward from here!”
